Happy New Game+ 2013

At the start of last year, weekendwarrio.rs was only just launching, so our 2012 GOTY piece was more a burst of reviews rather than a round-up. This time around, however, we’ve got a full year to look back on. Read on to see us miss the point, forget some brilliant games, cover some equally brilliant games, and generally have a bit of a laugh as we pass out our various awards for 2013.

No, what I meant was These men write about video games for a website, but what happens next will shock you. OH, DO PLEASE FUCK OFF WITH THAT SHIT.

New Growth – XCOM: Enemy Within

At weekendwarrio.rs we loved XCOM: Enemy Unknown. It got a mention as one of the best games of 2012, and I regaled you all with my tale of science fiction’s finest taking on the extraterrestrial threat.

Now Firaxis gives us Enemy Within – a proper Expansion Pack from the days of yore. But is it more of a good thing, or have they managed to cock the whole thing up?

Fridiary – XCOM – The Pen is Mightier than the Plasma Rifle – Part V

Gibson, the coward from the previous disaster that we shall not even refer to as a mission, is a rookie leading a team of rookies into a Very Difficult Terror situation in Berlin. Margaret Atwood, Lauren Beukes and Louis Bujould make up the rest of the team.

They have basic Assault Rifles, cheap Body Armour and no battle experience.

It’s going to be a massacre…

Fridiary – XCOM – The Pen is Mightier than the Plasma Rifle – Part IV

It’s 10 days until the council report. I’ve got panic in the UK, no money in the bank, and a lot of dead science fiction authors weighing on my conscience. I’ve got an Arc Thrower, but nowhere to keep stunned aliens, and the whole of Europe is one bad day away from panicking as well.

Things do not look good.

Fridiary – XCOM – The Pen is Mightier than the Plasma Rifle – Part III

A shadowy representative from the Council comes up on screen – they’ve got a mission that only my team of science fiction authors can handle.

Mary Shelley is back from the infirmary looking like a million volts, Harlan Ellison and Arthur C. Clarke are prepped, but with Tiptree gone we need new blood. Robert A. Heinlein and his goatee come up from the barracks and join the squad.

He wears a look of disappointment across his face when he sees the Skyranger and realises the team isn’t fired down into the mission zone from orbit in drop-pod torpedoes. There’s just no pleasing some people…

Fridiary – XCOM – The Pen is Mightier than the Plasma Rifle – Part II

Alien abductions at a construction site in Kolkata, India. Arthur C. Clarke is back from the infirmary but Ursula K. Le Guin and Mary Shelley are still out. Rounding out the team are Rookies Douglas Adams, L. Ron Hubbard and James Tiptree Jr. I tell Tiptree that she can use her real name here at XCOM, but she won’t hear of it. She salutes as they board the Skyranger.

Is the team ready for whatever they’re about to face on the ground in India? No, not at all.
